Title:   " Willa Cather: The Writer and the Word "

This lesson draws from a June, 1981, conference of scholars, critics and students from the United States and Canada who gathered at Hastings College and in Red Cloud, Nebraska, to explore how the events in Willa Cather's life related to and became incorporated in her works. Cather's popularity has continued to grow worldwide and exploring her background enriches the reader's appreciation of her works. Participants at the conference who appear in the videotape and discuss her writings include: John J. Murphy, chairman of the English Department at Merrimack College, North Andover, Massachusetts; Mildred R. Bennett, founder of the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial; Hal Shiffler, chairman, Speech and Theater Arts, Hastings College; Bruce P. Baker II, professor of English, University of Nebraska at Omaha; Susan J. Sosowski, associate professor of English, University of Nebraska at Omaha; and David Stouck, associate professor of English, Simon Fraser University, British Columbia. Excerpts from Cather's short stories and her novels, My Antonia and O Pioneers!, are read.
