Title: " Plan, Till and Plant "
The first lesson details a series of management decisions which need to be made before the corn is planted. These pre-planting decisions are made on the basis of past crop growing records and the type of soil involved. The kind of soil -- clay or sand or some combination in between -- affects all other crop management decisions. The texture, for instance, largely determines the moisture holding capacity of the field; it also has a bearing on the kind of seed to be planted and the types of machinery to use for tillage. The lesson demonstrates the best compromise of weed, moisture and erosion control and discusses selection of the proper variety of seed and planting procedures.
