Title:   " Farm, The "

Part 1--The Farm begins with the gradual setting in of the Depression in the early twenties, well in advance of the stock market crash of 1929. Plummeting crop prices and heavy mortgages stalked the farmer for nearly a decade before the hard times spread to other sectors, of the population. When it did spread and the market crashed, it made a bad situation worse for the farmer. The drought made it impossible. Furious dust storms destroyed many farms and made many others quite impossible to work. Thousands were forced to sever close and deeply held ties with the land and move on to seek another means o supporting themselves and their families. Still, some hung on. The Farmer's Holiday Association enabled many to retain their farms, livestock, and equipment through "Penny Auctions" and other means. The unfolding of these events and the people's reactions to them are chronicled here.
