Title:   " Man and the Land "

This first program explores how one group of people, the Native Americans, responded to and were shaped by the Plains. Series host Wallace Stegner begins with the help of Preston Holder, and points out that the region is diverse and possesses a strange beauty. Then with Scott Momaday and George Frison, the program explores how some of the over 20 major tribal groups in the region adapted to this special ecology, how they hunted or grew crops, how they built their homes and organized their societies, and how they worshipped the land and sun. Theirs was a life in harmony with their environment -- until white men, with their strange diseases and hunger for land, entered the plains.
