Ecology defines various aspects of prairie, giving a brief history of how it developed, how it ended and what it is today. Various grassland locations are used to illustrate the present day prairie. Tall grass, mixed and short grass prairies are identified. Also illustrated are the layers of vegetation and root systems. Life forms of the prairie ecosystem other than plants are also discussed.
